In the Footsteps of Caravaggio from Rome, Naples, and Malta
May 21 to 30, 2010
Follow the turbulent career of Caravaggio, the great 17th-century Italian painter, 400 years after his death in 1610. During five nights in Rome, follow Caravaggio's early career, viewing major works and lesser known treasures in palaces, galleries, and churches housing his paintings and altarpieces. While in Rome, visit an extraordinary retrospective exhibition of Caravaggio’s work, which will bring together for the first time thirty Caravaggio paintings from major museums around the world. A day trip to Naples will be spent exploring Caravaggio's influence in this ancient seaside city where the Pio Monte della Misericordia church houses his important painting, The Seven Works of Mercy. During a three night stay on the island of Malta see the artist's final masterpiece in St. John's Co-Cathedral and explore the interesting mix of medieval and baroque architecture. This tour is led by Susie Orso and accompanied by Dr. Jill Finsten, SBMA Director of Special Projects for the Study of Art and Culture. Combined with the numerous works we will see in situ, this tour presents a very unique opportunity to experience an extensive overview of the oeuvre of this baroque genius during a very special time.
