Los Grandes: the Great Murals of Rivera, Orozco, and Siqueiros in Guadalajara and Mexico City
April 17 to 24, 2010

Accompanied by cultural anthropologist Florencio Moreno, explore Mexican Muralism, the 20th-century art movement that catapulted Rivera, Orozco, and Siqueiros along with their contemporaries to international fame. Spend three nights in Guadalajara, Mexico's second largest city, with regal colonial architecture, long avenues, a vibrant cultural life, and some of Orozco’s most impressive murals. Day trips from Guadalajara include visits to the suburb of Tlaquepaque, a folk art center of Mexico, and to Lake Chapala, where idyllic views, tropical vegetation, and charming fishing villages have long drawn artists and writers. Continue to Mexico City for four nights to see several powerful murals by Rivera, Orozco, and Siqueiros; discover the outstanding collections at the Palacio de Bellas Artes and the Museo de Arte Moderno; and explore smaller collections including Dolores Olmeda Patiño’s home, Frida Kahlo’s Casa Azul, and the twin studios of Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo. During a day trip from Mexico City visit Cuernavaca to see Rivera’s murals in the Palacio de Cortez and visit the Robert Brady Museum. Also visit Taxco, a colonial town that is home to more than 200 silversmiths whose workmanship is world-renowned. $2880 per person, double occupancy; $885 single supplement; $250 SBMA donation.
