Is It Art or Science?
What is the Carousel of Physics?
The Carousel of Physics is a rotating kinetic sculpture about 11 feet in diameter, built on a metal skeleton, and divided into 15 thematically linked Sectors. The metal skeleton houses the computers, electronics, and mechanical devices that power the sculpture. The visible surfaces display laser-cut and 3-D printed shapes, devices, and mechanisms that showcase both art and science. The sculpture has been aesthetically designed with a nod to the red, yellow, and blue palette and geometric shapes of Dutch artist Piet Mondrian of the De Stijl art movement.
A team of four Dos Pueblos Engineering Academy seniors collaborated with mentors to design, fabricate, and program each of the 15 Sectors of the Carousel of Physics. This sculpture is the capstone project that combines elements of computer programming, engineering physics, art and design, and machining that they have studied over four years in the Engineering Academy.
Each sector demonstrates a branch of physics, including sound, waves, light, electromagnetism, kinematics, fluids, and more.
