This 10-week series of adult ceramics classes is inspired by work of Claude Monet and Marc Chagall, whose paintings are currently on view in Highlights from the Permanent Collection. Chagall's dreamlike subject matter with favorite motifs, including angels, fish, barnyard animals, and birds rendered in jewel tones, provide inspiration for functional vessels and ceramic sculptures. Monet's Impressionist landscapes painted in the open air captured how light and the exchange of colored reflections altered the scene. His palette and paint application technique of thickly applied bold, flat strokes of unblended colors inspire projects focusing on surface decoration and glazing techniques. Perfect for beginners, this program introduces participants to the techniques of ceramics, including hand building and throwing on the wheel through small group instruction and individual attention. Course includes all materials, firings, and a complimentary docent-led tour of the Museum.
