Japan by Sea: Land of the Rising Sun aboard "Caledonian Sky" - CANCELLED
Cruise through the Inland Sea and the Sea of Japan on a delightful springtime exploration of Japan, beginning with a deluxe 3-night hotel stay in Kyoto. This small nation of nearly 7,000 islands is wonderfully suited for exploration by ship and our chartered vessel, the 114-passenger Caledonian Sky, is the smallest deluxe ship available in the waters surrounding Japan. Without the crowds brought by larger ships, we are able to enjoy a fascinating variety of tranquil historic areas, artistic centers, and charming small islands, including the remote Oki Islands.
Experience dramatic coastlines, sacred temples, celebrated gardens, and the cutting-edge art and architecture of the Miho Museum and Naoshima’s Benesse Art Site. Spend a day in the UNESCO World Heritage city of Gyeongju, South Korea. Meet and interact with a Zen Buddhist monk and the owner of a traditional geisha house, and participate in a hands-on taiko drum workshop with the world-famous Kodo drummers at their home base on remote Sado Island. Take part in a traditional tea ceremony, visit a pearl farm in Uwajima, and marvel at the stunning iconic beauty of Miyajima’s torii gate.
In the company of expert guides and other like-minded travelers, explore the culture, art, architecture, and history of Japan during an enriching educational program both on board the ship and during shore excursions. Optional extensions are also available, including a pre-cruise extension to explore Shikoku Island’s remote Iya Valley, and a post-cruise extension to travel by bullet train from Niigata to Tokyo and discover the highlights of Japan’s capital city.
