In Art Kitchen/Science Studio, Teaching Artists use works of art from the Museum’s collection as a starting point to explore the shared materials, methods, and myths associated with art, food, and science. Hands-on demonstration, experimentation, taste testing, and art making provide the perfect recipe for learning.
On January 14 and 15, Loree Gold, SBMA Docent and Teaching Artist, delves into the science of color and taste, inspired by George Wesley Bellows’ Steaming Streets (1908), currently on view in the Museum’s Ridley-Tree Gallery. This hour-long family program includes an interactive talk, a black ice cream-making demonstration and tasting (provided by chef Peter Sonderegger of the Fire & Ice Museum Cafe), and an art project that uses three types of paint made with vine black powdered pigment―water soluble oil, egg tempera, and watercolor.
Each session is limited to 30 participants and advanced registration is required. To register, contact Kelly Almeida at 805.884.6457 or kalmeida@sbma.net.
